Gift of a Lifetime
Harold Micklethwaite
Harold Micklethwaite owned and operated Harold's Restaurant for over 40 years. It was one of Portsmouth's most beloved restaurants and at one time according to the magazine "Living Single" boasted the largest menu selection in all of Ohio. To create the magic of Harold's Restaurant, Mr. Micklethwaite studied the culinary arts in Paris and Munich, Germany. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel and Institutional Restaurant Management from Michigan State University and a Master's Degree in Nutrition from the University of Michigan.
It has been said of Harold, by friends and family alike, that he was a tough and shrewd businessman. It has also been said that Harold had a heart of gold. Harold dearly loved his community and his friends. Because of his love of community and his generosity, Harold created a will to include gifts to nonprofit organizations he supported during his lifetime. Although Harold Micklethwaite passed away in 1998, the endowment fund that bears his name continues to give to those charities he supported during his lifetime: the Scioto Foundation, to support community grants; the Southern Ohio Museum; the Salvation Army; Portsmouth Office; First Presbyterian Church of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Cornerstone Methodist Church of Portsmouth, Ohio.
