Dorothy Maier
Gift of a Lifetime
Dorothy Maier enjoyed her life as a retired hairdresser in Cincinnati, Ohio, by caring for homeless children. Dorothy, who never had children of her own, took great pride in giving a home to a child in need of a foster parent. According to her dearest friend, Kathy, "Dorothy was happy for the kids to find a foster home, but she was always so saddened to see them go." Even though Dorothy lived in the Cincinnati area for more than 50 years, she had strong connections to Portsmouth. Dorothy was born here on April 23, 1918, and her brother, Raymond, was a lifelong resident of the city and worked for many years at Detroit Steel in New Boston. After his death, Dorothy felt it was time to update her will. Part of her plan was to give back to the community of her birth; the other part was to find a way to honor the memory of her brother. Through the help of her attorney, Dorothy did both. She established the Raymond L. Arn & Dorothy L. Maier Scholarship Fund to benefit worthy youth from Scioto County, Ohio, to attend Shawnee State University. Although Dorothy passed away on Friday, December 13, 2002, her bequest to the Scioto Foundation lives on through a permanent edowment fund. To date, 36 $1,000 scholarships have been given to local youth and each year hereafter, students will benefit from Dorothy's gift of a lifetime.
