Scioto County Medical Society

The Scioto County Medical Society Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to worthy medical students beginning or continuing their college studies. Funds were awarded for the first time in spring of 2003.

“The Scioto County Medical Society has awarded scholarships for a number of years to worthy students attending medical school from Scioto County,” said Grace Martin, Executive Secretary for the society, “ Martin said the Scioto County Medical Society Scholarship Award Program began in 1971 with the creation of the Dr. Alden B. Oakes Scholarship Fund, honoring the first orthopedic surgeon in our area. A second scholarship fund was added in 1997 to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Spencer K. Miller, who practiced family medicine in Sciotoville.

Martin said that area doctors continue to support the Scholarship Fund program because they can designate whom the fund name honors. “Doctors have the option of naming new scholarship funds after themselves or in honor of their mentors, friends and colleagues in the medical profession,” Martin said. She said the goal of the Scioto County Medical Society is to grow the endowment fund so it can provide larger amounts and more medical scholarships, and that contributions of any and all sizes are welcome to the fund.

The Scioto Foundation administers the endowment fund, which includes advertising scholarship availability, prescreening applicants and forwarding applications of worthy candidates to the medical society for selection, publicizing scholarship awards, processing payment of scholarship awards, and tracking the progress of student scholars.
