Harry S. Knighton
Gift of a Lifetime

Established by the Shawnee Nature Club, this fund provides scholarships to students to attend the Natural Science Museum Center near Lynx, Ohio. Beacuse of Harry's dedication to the classroom, the Shawnee Natural Club felt this was a fitting way to honor Mr. Knighton and all the postive things he had done for his students and the community.

A Columbus native, Harry and his family moved to Portsmouth when he was 5. He later graduated from Portsmouth High School In 1935 and married his sweetie Elise Louise Webb in 1937. Together, for 60 years, they shared a love for voluntary community service and made selfless gifts of time, energy, and expertise-not only to our local area, but also to the county and several foreign lands.

Mr. Kinghton was deeply interested in the natural world. His diverse interests include scouting, nature study, birding, nature photography, fungi, wildflowers, conservation, and forestry. He organized the Shawnee Nature Club and led countless hikes, conferences, classes, and projects. He wrote a monthly column, "Nature Note" for the Community Common. He was known world wide for his study of fungi. And in 1959, Harry founded the North American Mycologiecal Association.
