United Way of Scioto County
The United Way of Scioto County is a voluntary non-profit organization that consists of volunteers who live and or work in Scioto County.
The United Way of Scioto County strives to increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another. Scioto County conducted its first campaign drive efforts in 1923. Approximately $32,000 was raised for nine agencies; the name given to the campaign drive was the Portsmouth Welfare Association. In the later 1930’s the Welfare Association was renamed the Portsmouth Community Chest. During World War II, the organization’s name was expanded to the Portsmouth Community and War Chest, which continued to raise funds for the community and the war effort. Following the war, the organization adopted the name United Community Chest. Over a period of years and after name modifications, the United Community Chest joined membership status with the United Way of America. By joining this elite organization, the United Way of Scioto County, Inc., became what it is today.
Currently, the United Way fundraises for 17 member agencies so that they may carry out their mission and meet the needs of those in Scioto County.
The creation of this endowment fund is a tangible way to help show United Way’s commitment to provide its services for the future to the community. The United Way of Scioto County partnered with the Scioto Foundation because it is a community foundation.
Establishing the United Way Endowment fund through the Scioto Foundation allows the United Way to see a vision for the future and secure funds that can be used at a later time when it is most needed in our community.
