Community Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The CSDHH Endowment Fund was created to provide operating support to the agency. CSDHH provides assistance to deaf individuals in overcoming the barriers to independent living resulting from an inability to communicate and socialize with others in their environment.
Community Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was established in 1984 to fill a void in the delivery system of human services in our hearing impaired community. In addition to providing direct services to meet the unique needs of this population, CSDHH also serves as a link between deaf citizens and community service providers. Its purpose is to provide equality and facilitate accessibility for the communicatively-impaired persons in a culturally appropriate manner to promote personal growth and development.
CSDHH is considered a center for information about deafness. Deaf awareness presentations, American Sign Language classes and in-service training to staff of various human service providers are examples of the types of information CSDHH brings to the Southern Ohio community. CSDHH is one of ten centers in the State of Ohio serving Scioto, Adams, Pike, Lawrence, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Ross, Meigs and Vinton Counties.
CSDHH offers a variety of program services to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing communities in our region such as Interpreting Services, Case Management Services, Advocacy; Referral and Linkage, Devices, Educational Programs, Sign Language Classes, In-Service Presentations, Rural Outreach Programs, D-Link and VRS.
The CSDHH is a program of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC). Currently there is a fifteen member Advisory Committee composed of residents who are deaf and professionals of the community act in an advisory capacity to SOMC.
Sandra Blakemen, Director of CSDHH, hopes, “The CSDHH Fund will become widely known and individuals, agencies and friends from all areas of life will give the gift of communication through the Endowment to ensure deaf and hard of hearing individuals continue to receive services.â€
