Gift of a Lifetime
Leo R. Thompson
Established by Jack and Ann Thompson, this scholarship fund honors the memory of Jack's brother, Leo. A devoted educator for thirty-two years, Mr. Leo Thompson nurtured his students with a caring atmosphere.
Leo R. Thompson was born in Scioto County in 1923. He was the son of the late Ray and Mary Newman Thompson. Both his father and mother were teachers. His father also held the position of Principal at Rarden.
Leo was a graduate of Rarden High School, Wilmington College and Xavier University. He was both a teacher and Principal at Northwest High School and then became Superintendent of the Northwest School District. In 1980 he retired from the Superintendent position.
During his lifetime, Leo lived in either Portsmouth or in the Mount Joy community. He was a Shriner and a member of the American Legion and Retired Teachers' Association. He also served in the Army during World War II.
This scholarship will assist a graduating senior from Northwest High School who plans on majoring in education at the school of his/her choice within the state of Ohio. The recipient must show financial need and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
