Howard C. & Mary Coe Brown
Gift of a Lifetime
Howard C. and Mary Coe Brown have a combination fund. It is part restricted, unrestricted and part scholarship. The fund benefits Wesley United Methodist Church, the Syrian Temple, and provides scholarships for Portsmouth High School graduates attending Ohio State University. The unrestricted portion makes grants to local nonprofit organizations.
Mr. Brown was a salesman for many years with Kraft Foods and he owned Brownie's Newsstand located then at 7th and Chillicothe Streets. He started the Drum and Bugle Corp for Boy Scouts at Franklin Avenue Methodist Church . Mr. Brown was a World War II veteran, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, a mason and a member of the Syrian Shrine of Cincinnati, Disabled American Veterans and the Portsmouth Elks Lodge.
Mrs. Brown was a Portsmouth native and teacher in the Portsmouth City School District for several years. She was the running Faculty Advisor for the Junior Senior Prom at PHS. She was a graduate of Ohio State University, a member of its Alumni Association, and was a life member of Scioto Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Ohio State Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Elks Ladies Bridge Association and Wesley United Methodist Church.
