Harold & Gertrude Clayton

The Harold and Gertrude Clayton Fund is an unrestricted fund that was established as a memorial by their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Clayton.

Mr. Clayton was a native of Portsmouth and served in the U.S. Navy during World War I as an officer. He was employed at E. J. Kenrick Wholesale Company and later purchased the business from Mr. John Kenrick. He was active in the American Legion and served as Commander.

Mr. Clayton served three terms as Mayor of Portsmouth in the 1940's. During this time, the large flood wall was built. Mr. Clayton died in Portsmouth in 1956 at the age of 62.

Mrs. Clayton was a Portsmouth native and was active in the Mercy Hospital Guild and Holy Redeemer Church. She worked at Kenrick's part-time. Mrs. Clayton died at Hillview in 1986 at the age of 88.

The Clayton were parents of two children, George H. Clayton of Datan Island, South Carolina, and Mildred Clayton Roby of Worthington, Ohio, and Stuart, Florida.
